How to Prepare Your Skin for Your Boudoir Session: A Full Timeline

One of the biggest things that can elevate your final images — beyond posing and lighting — is how your skin looks and feels on the day of your shoot. You don't need a complicated routine. You just need to start a few weeks out and stay consistent.
4–6 Weeks Before: The Foundation
Focus on consistent moisturizing — CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (cerave.com) is a dermatologist-favorite that works across all skin types. Add gentle exfoliation 2–3x per week with Paula's Choice BHA Exfoliant (paulaschoice.com). Apply SPF daily — EltaMD UV Clear (eltamd.com) is lightweight and non-greasy. Book any waxing or laser appointments now so irritation can fully resolve before your shoot.
2–3 Weeks Before: Addressing Specific Concerns
For dry skin or rough patches, Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Lotion used nightly works wonders on elbows, knees, and shins. For hyperpigmentation, The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% (theordinary.com) is an affordable, well-researched option applied nightly. For body acne, PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash used a few times a week can significantly reduce breakouts. For razor bumps, try Fur Oil (furyou.com) or Tend Skin (tendskin.com) after shaving.
1 Week Before: The Final Stretch
Last wax or shave 5–7 days before — gives skin time to calm but keeps things smooth. Optional: Crest 3D Whitestrips for brighter whites in photos. Get your nails done — they show up in close-up shots. And don't try any new products this week.
48 Hours Before: Simple and Steady
Drink your water — hydrated skin photographs completely differently than dehydrated skin. Use a body scrub like Tree Hut Sugar Scrub (treehutshea.com) to remove dead skin cells and add a slight glow. Avoid alcohol. Get your sleep.
A Note on Self-Tanner
Self-tanner can be beautiful in boudoir photography. Apply 3–4 days before your shoot — not the night before. St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Mousse (sttropeztan.com) and Bondi Sands (us.bondisands.com) are highly rated and photograph naturally. Skip self-tanner on hands and feet unless you have experience — these are most likely to streak.
None of this has to be perfect. I work with real people, real skin, and real life — and retouching exists for a reason. Book your session at www.boudoirofcincinnati.com
